Nothing's wrong. If you had a demat account with Edelweiss and it suddenly looks different, or you're searching for "Edelweiss demat account" and keep landing on pages about a company called Nuvama, that's not a mix-up. Edelweiss's broking and wealth management business was renamed. Same account, same holdings, different name on the door.
That covers the part that's probably worrying you. What's left is the practical stuff — what actually changed, whether you need to do anything about it, how to log back in if it's been a while, and what it costs now. That's what the rest of this is for.
What actually happened to Edelweiss?
Edelweiss Financial Services used to run a bunch of businesses under one roof — broking, wealth management, asset management, insurance. In 2023, the broking and wealth management piece, the part that actually handled demat accounts, trading, and advisory, was carved out into its own separately listed company. That company is Nuvama Wealth Management Limited. Dig into exchange filings and you'll still see it referred to as the entity "formerly known as Edelweiss Securities Limited." It wasn't a quiet rebrand, either — it went through shareholder approval and NCLT clearance before Nuvama got listed on the NSE and BSE under the ticker NUVAMA.
So this wasn't a shutdown, and Edelweiss wasn't swallowed by a rival. It was a spin-off — the wealth and broking business got its own company, its own listing, and a new name. The broking license, the DP registration, the client accounts that came with all of it — none of that disappeared. It just moved over to Nuvama.
There's a backstory if you're curious. PAG, a private equity firm, bought a controlling stake in Edelweiss's wealth management business back in 2020, and the plan to eventually spin it off and list it independently was baked in from the start. The 2023 demerger was that plan finally playing out, not a sudden decision made under pressure. Worth knowing if you're the sort of investor who checks who actually owns your broker before trusting them with money — this was a planned restructuring with regulatory sign-off at every stage, not a company in trouble.
If you already had an Edelweiss demat account, what happens now?
For anyone who already had an account, the rebrand doesn't touch your holdings — but it does change a few things you'll actually bump into day to day.
What stays the same
- Everything sitting in your demat account — shares, mutual funds, whatever else — is untouched. A rename doesn't move your holdings anywhere.
- Your PAN-linked relationship carries over as-is. No fresh KYC just because the company changed its name.
- Your DP registration with CDSL continues under Nuvama, so there's no "re-opening" your account the way there would be with a brand-new one.
What changes
- Contract notes, holding statements, tax documents — all of it now says Nuvama instead of Edelweiss.
- The app. Edelweiss Mobile Trader is gone, replaced by Nuvama Markets — it may have auto-updated on your phone, or you might need to grab the new one from the app store.
- Web login moved off the Edelweiss domain to Nuvama's own site.
- Support, relationship managers, branch contacts — same people in a lot of cases, just answering to the Nuvama name now.
So if you haven't logged in for a while and the old app or site doesn't behave the way you remember — that's expected, not a red flag.
How to get back into your old Edelweiss account
- Find Nuvama Markets. Search your app store for "Nuvama Markets" — that's the app Edelweiss Mobile Trader turned into. Still have the old app installed? Check if it's nudged you to update; a lot of brokers push the rebrand as an update rather than making you install fresh.
- Sign in with what you've already got. Your old PAN, client ID, or registered mobile number should work. Nuvama's system still recognises that same client relationship, so you shouldn't need to register again.
- Reset your password if it doesn't work. Passwords don't always carry over cleanly. Hit "forgot password" on the login screen and it should send a reset to your registered email or number.
- Call support if none of that works. Have your old Edelweiss client ID or demat account number ready. It's a common enough question after a rebrand that support should be able to re-link your login or confirm your account status without much back-and-forth.
- Double-check with CDSL directly. If you'd rather not rely on the broker's app for peace of mind, CDSL has its own portal where you can see your consolidated holdings across any DP linked to your PAN.
There's no deadline attached to any of this — your holdings aren't at risk because of a rename — but it's worth sorting out sooner if you actually want to trade or check your portfolio anytime soon.
Nuvama demat account charges and fees
Nuvama's pricing has shifted a few times since the Edelweiss days, including newer, cheaper plans aimed at active traders alongside the original full-service model. Account opening, AMC, brokerage on delivery, intraday, F&O — these numbers move around periodically, so anything quoted here risks being stale by the time you're reading it. Check current figures before deciding whether to stick with the account or shop around.
Our Nuvama broker page has current account opening charges, AMC, and brokerage numbers — check it before deciding whether to stay or switch.
See Nuvama charges →Should you continue with Nuvama, or move to a different broker?
A name change on its own isn't a reason to switch brokers. The business, the regulatory registrations, the client protections — none of that changed, and moving your holdings elsewhere takes real effort: a demat transfer, new bank mandates, learning a different app. If Edelweiss was working fine for you, Nuvama inherits that same relationship, so there's no real pressure to jump ship just because of the rename.
That said, a rename is a decent excuse to actually check whether the account still fits you. Opened it years back mainly for the research and advisory side? Worth confirming Nuvama still offers that at a price you're happy with — the industry's swung hard toward cheap discount brokers since then. If cost matters most to you now, put Nuvama's current charges side by side with a discount broker before deciding either way.
If you do decide to move, it's the same process as switching between any two brokers — transfer holdings out of your Nuvama account using a delivery instruction slip or CDSL's online transfer facility, close open positions first, then update your bank mandate with the new broker before pulling out remaining funds. No fixed timeline on any of this. The account keeps working under Nuvama for as long as you leave it open, so take your time comparing instead of rushing a decision just because the name changed.
Where to go for the official information
For anything account-specific — login trouble, KYC updates, withdrawing funds, closing the account — skip third-party guides, this one included, and go straight to Nuvama's own site. That's nuvamawealth.com, and it's where you'll actually log in, raise a support ticket, or grab the current version of any form you need.
Frequently asked questions
Is my Edelweiss demat account still active, or has it been closed?
Still active, yes. Nothing was closed — the company running it just changed its name. Your holdings, funds, and demat balance carried over untouched; only the branding on your statements and the login page looks different now.
Do I need to open a new demat account because of the Edelweiss-to-Nuvama change?
No new account needed. This was a corporate demerger and rename, not a migration you have to act on. Your PAN-linked demat account, DP ID, and holdings are all still there, just under Nuvama instead of Edelweiss. The only time you actually need to do something is if your old login stops working.
What is the Edelweiss trading app called now?
Nuvama Markets. Edelweiss Mobile Trader has been retired — if you already had the old app, it may have updated automatically, otherwise grab Nuvama Markets from the app store and log in with your existing PAN and registered mobile number.
How do I access my old Edelweiss account now?
Use Nuvama's website or the Nuvama Markets app and log in with the same PAN, client ID, or mobile number you had with Edelweiss. If your old password doesn't work, use "forgot password" on the login page, or contact Nuvama support with your old Edelweiss client ID and they can re-link things for you.
Where can I check current Nuvama demat account charges?
Charges change often enough that any figure we quoted here would probably be stale soon. We keep an updated breakdown of Nuvama's account opening, AMC, and brokerage charges on our Nuvama charges page instead.
